Hanging around Palermo Viejo as a tourist / Recorriendo Palermo Viejo como una turista

After a year living in the US, I could finally travel to Argentina to visit my family. I spent an entire month in BA thanks to the Chilean volcano spewing ash to the east and my flight back being canceled and rescheduled for a week later. One of the first places I wanted to see was, of course, my favorite neighborhood.

After walking a couple of blocks and discovering new stores, meeting with friends, hanging around and taking photos it felt so good to be back. I noticed many changes, new openings and some venues gone, but this constant movement is also inherent to the neighborhood. I passed along places I had recognized on TV commercials in the US. Of course the exchange rate and the charming locations make it very appealing for foreign advertisers. Can you recognize the Palermo Hollywood restaurant which appears in this ad? Among another Buenos Aires’ location...

I noticed a strong inspiration in US trends (nothing really new), more and more brand names in English and business imitations where the concept was completely taken from American stores, like Anthropologie, for instance. Visit Muu Lechería for milk shakes, waffles and hamburgers; despite the anti-bullying campaign we observe in the US, model Iván de Pineda launched Bully Cashmere, though I’m not sure why anyone would choose a word with such negative connotation for naming a brand. Another American label which has also arrived to the neighborhood is Le Sport Sac, though more than one might think this is a French brand (Malabia 1706).

Other openings in the area include: Shynka home couture, Chucho Manucho, The Coffee Store (Gorriti 4702) and Havanna on Armenia 1788. Instead of their traditional alfajores, you have to taste their delicious havanets with dulce-de-leche. Ok ok, why not both? I love their white alfajor. For chocolate alfajores, I definitely prefer the ones from Cachafaz (you’ll find them in some kiosks and supermarkets).

I had lunch with friends at a restaurant called La Paila, which offers northern Argentine cuisine. Food was good and not so inexpensive as I remembered (yes, unfortunately inflation is high) and the service was very inefficient. One of my friends ordered hot eggplants, but her plate came cold. I ordered “empanadas” with quinoa and cheese, very interesting and tasty flavor, and a "panqueque de dulce-de-leche" (yes, I miss Argentine desserts!) with coffee, but I couldn’t enjoy it. The waitress said she couldn’t serve coffee. That dessert without coffee was not an option, so there was no dessert for me. One of my friends ordered a cup of tea. We waited and waited and waited and waited…..

Anyway, this is it for now. If you happen to be in Manhattan this Saturday, I’ll be at the NYC Designers Market at their new location in the Meatpacking District: 328 West 14th Street (between 8th & 9th Aves.), carrying hand-knit scarves and jewelry (air conditioning available, yes!!!). It’s near the High Line and Chelsea Market, you can’t miss it. Hope to meet you there!

Voy a estar presentando bufandas tejidas y bijouterie hecha a mano.

The reopening of the flea market/La reapertura del mercado de pulgas/A reabertura do mercado de pulgas/La réoverture du marché aux puces

The Palermo flea market of Dorrego Ave. has been closed since 2006. After years of interrupted renovations it seems that it will finally open its doors to the public again next month. This is a great place to find vintage furniture, china and collectibles.

From Trendy Palermo Viejo to Nolita & Queens/ De Trendy Palermo Viejo a Nolita y Queens

I never thought I would live in the US someday. It wasn’t my dream, it just happened. However, I always thought it would be great to have my store in New York City and promote the works of so many talented Argentine artists, designers and craftsmen. It was like an impossible dream, something that I have always thought of, knowing that it would never occur…until two Saturdays ago.

As I mentioned in a previous post, my husband has been living here for many years and it simply happened. We got married and now I am living in the US. So, a couple of Saturdays ago, I had my first event at The Market NYC, a designers market in the heart of Nolita (North of Little Italy), next to Soho. I participated with a table and a few pieces of jewelry, from Palermo Viejo to Nolita.

It was an awesome experience. I was very excited. Now, more than ever, I can feel very proud of Argentine designers and their talent and creativity, since I felt everything fit perfectly. For a few moments, I thought I was in my store in BA, talking with customers from Spain, Belgium or Australia. Like in Palermo Viejo, there were local visitors and from abroad. Whenever I saw someone with the Lonely Planet in their hands, I wanted to shout: “Hey, LP recommends my products in Buenos Aires!” Then, I realized I was in another city.

But which was my favorite moment of the day? Well, of course when I started selling (that’s the purpose of participating in a market as a vendor), but what really made my day was meeting Paul and Luis, two new yorkers, readers of this blog, who came to the market to meet me. They showed me their real appreciation. Thank you, guys, for your warm compliments. It was wonderful talking with you. You really gave me the inspiration to continue blogging again so here I am. I’m so happy that I’m already planning my next post.

I’m also taking this opportunity to let you know that this Saturday I’ll be again at The Market NYC in Nolita from 11 AM to 7 PM and this Sunday, at the Astoria Market, (at the Main Hall of the famous Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden), in Queens, from 12 to 5 PM.

Cheers!

Saludos

News

Hello, dear Readers!

It’s been a looooong time. I haven’t been posting because my life has
changed completely during the past year and I’d like to share some
news with you.

First of all, I got married and moved to the US. My loving husband is
Argentine but he's been living here for more than 20 years. So, now
I’m living in New Jersey and facing the challenge of both adapting to
life in a new country (with snow) and continuing with my career.

Second, the Atípica store is still open in Palermo Viejo. My dear
friend Mariana runs the business now, and she will be sending you
updates about new arrivals as usual.

In the meanwhile, I opened an online shop where you’ll be able to get
one-of-a-kind brand-new items that I’m making myself in my studio at
home and some of your old favorites.

I’ve also been taking tons of photographs. I’ve been creating
calendars with pictures of New York, Philadelphia, Brooklyn and Hoboken, besides my Buenos Aires, Tango
and Uruguay prints. Online galleries for my works can also be seen at http://www.atipica.imagekind.com/
As I’m no longer in Buenos Aires, I won’t be able to continue writing
about the neighborhood, but I invite you to send me your posts and
I’ll be glad to add them to the blog. Share your experiences, photos,
favorite shops and restaurant recommendations, and so on.

Looking forward to staying in touch with you! And if any of you are in the NY-NJ area, it would be fun to meet you!
